So What Makes Indian Food So Delicious and Unique?

First, let's talk a little bit about Indian food recipes and their flavors. First of all, they're unique and flavorful because they are commonly cooked using distinct spices and herbs that tickle and excite your taste buds. For example, you may have heard of masala, which is a spice that is very commonly used in Indian food recipes. Spices, such as masala, that are used when cooking Indian food are intended to awaken your senses while bringing you delicious and savory flavor!

Indian food recipes are generally known to be spicy, but the level of spiciness can differ greatly from region to region in India. For example, Southern Indians, through family tradition, tend to eat very spicy dishes, while Indians in the western states, such as Gujarat, traditionally eat milder dishes. Of course, we all have our own personal spice preferences and you can make any recipe as spicy or mild as you wish. If you are not sure what your preferred spice level is, you may want to start on the more mild side and increase spice to your dish as desired. In other words, you can incorporate the style and manner of cooking from any region of India into your own kitchen and cook whatever you want to. We built this section of our website so that you can discover or share Indian food recipes.

Historical Influences on Indian Food Recipes

The origins of Indian food recipes are as old as time. Food in India has been influenced through interaction with the people of Persia, Greece, Mongolia and Western Asia. The colonial period, a time when India was ruled by Great Britain, introduced European cooking styles to India. This lead to Indian food recipes becoming more diverse. It also created slight variations of dishes and incorporated different flavors into recipes.

Indian food recipes are fun to cook too! Recipes can include appetizers, the world famous Chai tea, vegetarian and non-vegetarian main dishes, and of course Indian desserts. Some people in India don't eat meat of any kind, while others eat fish, chicken, eggs and other meats.

Experiencing Indian Food Recipes

Before my first experiences with Indian food, I thought vegetables were nothing more than a side dish to complement meat, something prepared with salt and pepper, put in a salad, or fried. Often times, I found vegetables bland. Vegetarian Indian food recipes are anything but bland. A lot of Indian vegetarian dishes are even more savory and flavorful than many non-vegetarian dishes served in the United States and other western countries! I must also mention that Indian food recipes that include meat also use traditional Indian spices and are delicious too! An example of one is the famous dish Chicken Tiki Masala. We greatly enjoy flavorful food, so we created this space to discover and share Indian food recipes.

Enough Talk, Let's Get Cooking!

So, let's get you started on cooking some great recipes! If any of the ingredients are unfamiliar to you, it's because they are probably unique to Indian grocery stores. While some of spices may be harder to find in traditional American grocery stores, but don't worry, spices such as masala can be easily ordered online and are always available in Indian grocery stores. Chances are that you have an Indian grocery store near you, but, if not, online ordering is a great option.
